Around the Table: The Heart of Game Night

There’s a certain kind of magic that happens when people gather around a table. Growing up, some of my favorite memories were made over board games with my family. We played Aggravation, Guess Who?, and Scattergories until the boxes were worn and the rules were more like suggestions. There was always a little friendly competition, plenty of laughter, and usually someone insisting they absolutely did not move that piece. Those nights planted something in me. Today, my game closet holds more than 50 games, and I still believe a table is one of the best places to build connections.

In my twenties, that love of games turned into a tradition. For many years, my friends and I gathered for Game Night every Thursday night, except for Thanksgiving and the one closest to Christmas. We had a group text, we rotated who hosted, and the host handled snacks and beverages while the rest of us showed up ready to play. Some weeks were loud and competitive. Some were relaxed and full of conversation. But no matter what we played or what we served, the consistency mattered most. It gave us a reason to pause busy lives and sit down together.
Now, when I think about creating a space for games, I think about moments like that. A beautiful, solid wood game table becomes more than furniture. It becomes the place where new friends feel like old ones, and where families reconnect after busy weeks. At Gat Creek, our new game tables are designed for exactly that kind of living. They are made to be gathered around, and used often. Because the best memories are usually made sitting across from someone you love.
Game night in my family has its own special twist. I have a 90-year-old family member who insists on making up her own rules when we play Canasta. Somehow, despite the ever-changing “house rules,” she always wins. We all pretend to protest, but secretly we love it. The stories she tells about growing up in Switzerland in between hands are just as important as the cards on the table. That is the magic of playing together. It creates space for generations to meet in the middle.

And if you are wondering what to play with your family and friends, you can never go wrong with the classics. Clue, Scrabble, and Trivial Pursuit have stood the test of time for a reason. If you want something newer, try Blank Slate, Ticket to Ride, or What Do You Meme? for guaranteed laughs. The right game depends on your crowd, but the goal is always the same. Put the phones down. Lean in. Stay awhile.
And then there is Mahjong. If you have not noticed, it is having a moment. My mom alone plays with four different Mahjong groups every single week. I even gifted her Mahjong themed socks for Christmas, which she proudly wears to her games. Recently, I was on a cruise and saw women playing Mahjong all over the ship, tiles clicking and laughter echoing across the deck. It is social, strategic, and surprisingly stylish.
The table is just the beginning. What matters most is who gathers around it. Gat Creek’s new game tables are built for real life. For weekly traditions. For spontaneous Friday nights. For 90-year-olds who rewrite the rules. Because when you create a space for connection, the games are just the excuse.
